Swim Practice is Monday through Friday including meet days. 8:00–9:00AM - 11& older (younger advanced swimmers only if OK’d by coach) 9:00– 10:00AM - 10 & younger Please note: no parents, siblings or caregivers are allowed on deck during practice – this is for safety reasons and will be strictly enforced. We understand that some Sharks swim on year round teams. Although their practice times often conflict with Newburgh practices, occasional practice with the Sharks is encouraged to foster camaraderie and team spirit.
Absence Book is an essential log that our coaches refer to before each meet. It is very important that all swimmers list any dates they will be absent from a meet so that the coaches can properly plan the line up.
Volunteer Book is available at every practice for parents to sign up to volunteer to help at swim meets. If you have concerns about helping while caring for younger children, let us know and we’ll find a job that you can do with your children present. Swim meets can’t happen if we don’t have parent support!
Swim Meets are on Tuesdays and Thursdays through June and July – see attached schedule. Swimmers should arrive no later than 5:00PM for warm up. Meets start at 6:00PM.
A swimmer's age on May 31 determines the age group they swim. Swimmers compete in two to three events as determined by the coaches. Each event has a ‘points’ heat and may have several exhibition heats. The number of exhibition heats is limited in an effort to end the meets at a reasonable hour. This means more relays and less individual events for many swimmers.
Event sheets with swimmer names are posted on the Sharks bulletin board at home meets. At away meets, the event sheets are posted on portable boards and hung on fencing. It helps for swimmers to write their events on the back of their hand so they don’t miss their races.
Swimmers may swim in an older age group as determined by the coaches, but never in a younger age group. There are 49 events in each meet. Home team swims in lanes 1, 3, 5 and visiting team swims in lanes 2, 4, 6.
Team Spirit Wear is encouraged but not required. The 2010 team suit is the Speedo Cyber Swirl. Suits will be available to try on and purchase at the Parent Meeting and at Different Strokes in Livonia (mention Newburgh for a discount).
T-shirt, hoodie, shorts and bag orders must be turned in at the front desk by closing time on June 6 for delivery by the first meet on June 24. Any orders received after June 6 will not be delivered until mid July. Swim caps and goggles are advised for practice and races. Shark logo swim caps are available for $3 – ask swim directors, Nancy or Lynne, to purchase one.
Shark Wish Tank is new this year. If your swimmer really wants a chance to swim a particular race in a dual meet this season, make sure they fill out a ‘wish’ form and drop it in the tank. Coaches will do their best to grant that wish but they must have the request prior to the first meet of the season.
Treat Fridays will happen every Friday this season as a little incentive to get out of bed for Friday practices! Each swimmer will be offered a light treat following these practices.
Treat Table Donations are requested of every Sharks family. Revenue generated from Treat Table sales helps cover our team expenses. Food items will sell for 50 cents, please package accordingly.
Each family is asked to donate 2 dozen baked goods for one home meet based on the following schedule. June 29 -- last names beginning with A -- F July 1 -- last names beginning with G -- L July 15 -- last names beginning with M – R July 29 – last names beginning with S - Z
