Dual Meet Event Scoring

These 49 events, using the scoring shown above, result in a total of 406 possible points being divided between the two teams. However, since not all points are awarded (one team cannot take all points in a single event unless the opposing team had no swimmers in the event, the 3rd place points go unawarded in the event of a sweep), the total score of a dual meet is often less than 406 points.

Scoring trivia:
• Scoring at least 204 points means you have won.
• The lowest possible total score is 348 (if every event was a sweep).
• The lowest possible winning score is 175 (where all those sweeps were shared mostly evenly between the two teams).
• The highest possible winning score is 348 (where all those sweeps were taken by a single team).

Quick Scoring Using Net Event Scores

You can keep track of the meet score by adding up the net event scores to calculate how far ahead or behind your team currently is. This is often easier than trying to track both teams' scores (with event numbers and heat numbers and times being discussed, tracking two other independently increasing numbers can confusing).

Each event results in a net adjustment to the score. For example, a sweep in a relay gives the sweeping team 12 points (first place is 8, second place is 4, and third place is unawarded in a sweep), while taking first and second in an individual event gives a team 5 points (first place is 4, second place is 2, and the other team's third place 1 point is subtracted to get the net score). You can quickly figure the net effect of an event based on the finish, and then keep a running tally of the sum of those net values. Then you know at any point which team is ahead and by how much, and you can also figure out whether the other team can take the lead in whatever events are remaining. (Or you can just cheer for your team and wait for the results to be announced at the end!)
